    Linear High-Order Deterministic Tree Transducers with Regular Look-Ahead

    We introduce the notion of high-order deterministic top-down tree transducers (HODT) whose outputs correspond to single-typed lambda-calculus formulas. These transducers are natural generalizations of known models of top-tree transducers such as: Deterministic Top-Down Tree Transducers, Macro Tree Transducers, Streaming Tree Transducers... We focus on the linear restriction of high order tree transducers with look-ahead (HODTR_lin), and prove this corresponds to tree to tree functional transformations defined by Monadic Second Order (MSO) logic. We give a specialized procedure for the composition of those transducers that uses a flow analysis based on coherence spaces and allows us to preserve the linearity of transducers. This procedure has a better complexity than classical algorithms for composition of other equivalent tree transducers, but raises the order of transducers. However, we also indicate that the order of a HODTR_lin can always be bounded by 3, and give a procedure that reduces the order of a HODTR_lin to 3. As those resulting HODTR_lin can then be transformed into other equivalent models, this gives an important insight on composition algorithm for other classes of transducers. Finally, we prove that those results partially translate to the case of almost linear HODTR: the class corresponds to the class of tree transformations performed by MSO with unfolding (not closed by composition), and provide a mechanism to reduce the order to 3 in this case

    Exploiting a geometrically sampled grid in the steered response power algorithm for localization improvement

    The steered response power phase transform (SRP-PHAT) is a beamformer method very attractive in acoustic localization applications due to its robustness in reverberant environments. This paper presents a spatial grid design procedure, called the geometrically sampled grid (GSG), which aims at computing the spatial grid by taking into account the discrete sampling of time difference of arrival (TDOA) functions and the desired spatial resolution. A SRP-PHAT localization algorithm based on the GSG method is also introduced. The proposed method exploits the intersections of the discrete hyperboloids representing the TDOA information domain of the sensor array, and projects the whole TDOA information on the space search grid. The GSG method thus allows one to design the sampled spatial grid which represents the best search grid for a given sensor array, it allows one to perform a sensitivity analysis of the array and to characterize its spatial localization accuracy, and it may assist the system designer in the reconfiguration of the array. Experimental results using both simulated data and real recordings show that the localization accuracy is substantially improved both for high and for low spatial resolution, and that it is closely related to the proposed power response sensitivity measure

    Peri-urban agriculture in Barcelona. Outlining landscape dynamics vis \ue0 vis socio-environmental functions

    Dispersed urbanisation promotes complex relationships between rural areas and the urban fringe, with emerging new functions for peri-urban agriculture (PUA). Although PUA is a type of productive farming of interest for urban planning due to its recognised functions, comparative analyses are needed to relate farm dynamics to fringe landscape modifications in different socio-economic contexts. Given the current limitation of specific methodologies to analyse PUA dynamics, a quantitative approach profiling farm types and the related landscape structure in an expanding urban region, the Metropolitan Area of Barcelona, is proposed. Results indicate that PUA is based on five typologies with different territorial values, as a consequence of diverse economic relevance, socio-environmental weight and landscape prominence. Based on these results, a conservation strategy aimed at preserving the residual PUA landscape is proposed through the promotion of a polycentric functional network of farming with natural vegetation

    Radio Spectral Index and Expansion of 3C58

    We present new observations of the plerionic supernova remnant 3C58 with the VLA at 74 and 327 MHz. In addition, we re-reduced earlier observations at 1.4 and 4.9 GHz taken in 1973 and 1984. Comparing these various images, we find that: 1. the remnant has a flat and relatively uniform spectral index distribution, 2. any expansion of the remnant with time is significantly less than that expected for uniform, undecelerated expansion since the generally accepted explosion date in 1181 A.D., and 3. there is no evidence for a non-thermal synchrotron emission shell generated by a supernova shock wave, with any such emission having a surface brightness of <1 x 10^(-21) W / (m^2 Hz sr) at 327 MHz.Comment: 18 pages, 7 Figures, Latex, Accepted for publication in the Astrophysical Journa

    Landslide societal risk in Portugal in the period 1865-2015

    The existence of reliable databases on natural disasters is crucial to study mortality due to natural hazards in terms of temporal trends, spatial distribution and epidemiological topics. Features on fatalities caused by different types of hazards can be found for instance in natural hazard databases (e.g. EM-DAT, DISASTER) based on documental sources, demographic statistics, death certificates from hospitals and civil protection authorities. There are some constraints in the inclusion criteria of mortality data in natural disasters databases. For instance, the EM-DAT only record natural disasters that have caused at least 10 fatalities, while the Portuguese DISASTER database includes every occurrence that caused fatalities regardless of their number. In Portugal, social impacts caused by landslides occurred in the period 1865-2015 are gathered in the DISASTER database. This database includes social consequences (fatalities, injuries, missing people, evacuated people and homeless people) caused by landslides referred in newspapers. The DISASTER database contains 289 damaging landslides that caused 238 fatalities. In the present work we explore the mortality patterns resulting from damaging landslides in the country for an extended period. In this work we aim to: (i) analyse the spatio-temporal analysis of damaging landslides occurred in the last 155 years; (ii) analyse the frequency and the temporal evolution of fatal landslides; (iii) analyse the spatio-temporal distribution of fatalities generated by landslides; (iii) identify the most deadly landside types; (iv) verify gender tendencies in mortality resulting from landslides; and (v) evaluate the individual and societal risk. Individual risk is evaluated computing mortality rates for landslides, which are calculated based on the annual average population and the annual average of fatalities. The societal risk is evaluated by plotting the annual frequency of landslide cases that generated fatalities (F-N curves). The results demonstrate the absence of any exponential growth in time of both landslide cases and landslide mortality in Portugal. The highest number of landslide cases and related mortalities occurred in the period of 1935-1969 in relation to very wet years. After this period, the number of landslide mortalities decreased, although fatalities remained higher than those registered in the period of 1865-1934. The landslide fatalities mainly occurred in the north of the Tagus valley where the geologic and geomorphologic conditions are more prone to landslides. The Lisbon area registered a mortality hotspot, which is explained by natural conditions combined with the high exposure of population to landslide risk. In the South of Portugal landslide fatalities are constrained to coastal cliffs reflecting a careless intensive use of the coastal areas for tourism. Falls and flows were responsible for the highest number of fatalities associated with landslides. Males were found to have the highest frequency of fatalities and fatalities inside buildings were dominant, mostly in rural areas. In conclusion, the spatial patterns of landslide mortality can be related to the unequal distribution of predisposing conditions to landslides, changes in the land use and exposure and social vulnerability to landslide hazards.N/

    Optical and X-ray Spectroscopy of 1E 0449.4-1823: Demise of the original type 2 QSO

    New optical spectra of the original narrow-line quasar 1E 0449.4-1823 show that it now has broad emission lines of considerable strength, eliminating it as a "type 2 QSO" candidate. We suggest that the behavior of 1E 0449.4-1823 is the same as that of some Seyfert 1.8 and 1.9 galaxies, in which Goodrich attributed long-term variations of their broad Balmer lines to dynamical motions of obscuring material located in or around the broad-line region. The optical continuum and broad emission-line regions of 1E 0449.4-1823 may still be partly covered in our line of sight, which would explain its large forbidden-line equivalent widths and flat alpha_ox relative to other low-redshift QSOs. Also present are apparent absorption features in the broad Balmer lines and in Mg II, which may be related to the past obscuration and current emergence of the broad-line region. However, it is difficult to distinguish absorption from broad emission-line peaks that are displaced in velocity; we consider the latter a plausible competing interpretation of these peculiar line profiles. An ASCA X-ray spectrum of 1E 0449.4-1823 can be fitted with a power-law of Gamma = 1.63, intrinsic N_H < 9 x 10^20 cm-2, and no Fe Kalpha line emission. Its 2-10 keV luminosity is 6.7 x 10^44 ergs/s. With regard to the still hypothetical type 2 QSOs, we argue that there is little evidence for the existence of any among X-ray selected samples.Comment: to appear in ApJ July 1, 1998 (vol. 501). 23 pages including figures.     Strain-controlled fatigue loading of an additively manufactured AISI 316L steel: Cyclic plasticity model and strain–life curve with a comparison to the wrought material

    Low cycle fatigue (LCF) regime was experimentally studied for a 316L steel additively manufactured by laser-powder bed fusion (L-PBF), a material widely used in sectors that require a reliable durability analysis. Material cyclic elastoplastic behavior is described by the Chaboche–Voce combined plasticity model, which displayed a great degree of accuracy. The fatigue life was modeled by both invoking the Manson–Coffin curve and other simplified models derived from static properties of the material; some of which showed remarkably good accuracy. A quantitative comparison with a wrought-processed 316L steel displayed a markedly different cyclic elastoplastic response but comparable fatigue strengths

    Metabolic and Hormonal Determinants of Glomerular Filtration Rate and Renal Hemodynamics in Severely Obese Individuals.

    OBJECTIVE: Renal function is often compromised in severe obesity. A true measurement of glomerular filtration rate (GFR) is unusual, and how estimation formulae (EstForm) perform in such individuals is unclear. We characterized renal function and hemodynamics in severely obese individuals, assessing the reliability of EstForm. METHODS: We measured GFR (mGFR) by iohexol plasma clearance, renal plasma flow (RPF) by 123I-ortho-iodo-hippurate, basal and stimulated vascular renal indices, endothelium-dependent and -independent vasodilation using flow-mediated dilation (FMD) as well as metabolic and hormonal profile in morbid, otherwise healthy, obese subjects. RESULTS: Compared with mGFR, the better performing EstForm was CKD-EPI (5.3 ml/min/1.73 m2 bias by Bland-Altman analysis). mGFR was directly related with RPF, total and incremental glucose AUC, and inversely with PTH and h8 cortisol. Patients with mGFR below the median shown significantly higher PTH and lower vitamin D3. Basal or dynamic renal resistive index, FMD, pulse wave velocity were not related with mGFR. In an adjusted regression model, renal diameter and plasma flow remained related with mGFR (R2 = 0.67), accounting for 15% and 21% of mGFR variance, respectively. CONCLUSIONS: CKD-EPI formula should be preferred in morbid obesity; glucose increments during oral glucose tolerance test correlate with hyperfiltration; RPF and diameter are independent determinants of mGFR; slightly high PTH values, frequent in obesity, might influence mGFR
